MESSENGERS by Jeffrey Zablotny

Documentary, 45 minutes

VOSE

A poetic exploration of three underground telescopes in Canada, Japan, and Antarctica that detect neutrinos from black holes. The film asks why humans build immense structures to answer questions we may never be able to fully answer.

Conversation with:

Thorsten Lux, research associate professor at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IFAE) in Barcelona, where he co-directs the neutrino and instrumentation groups. Lux is involved in Hyper-Kamiokande, the successor to the Super-Kamiokande we just saw on screen: a giant detector being built under a mountain in Japan. From inside these underground laboratories, he will explain what neutrinos are, why we need to go so deep into the earth to hear them, and what they can reveal about the origin and functioning of the universe.
